Coach Ray’s Sufferings: A Week of Camping

Follow me on my Half Ironman marathon training and #100DaysOfTri journey’s concurrently. Here is how my week unfolded.

Now that I’ve committed to running the Buller Marathon, that is where my training is focused.

With New Year’s now behind us and I’m just sitting back chilling and relaxing whilst away camping with family and friends, I found time each day to get out and do some training.

MONDAY

#100DaysOfTri Day 66

Having been out camping and running every day since Wednesday with a big hill run the day before, I took the opportunity to spend 30 minutes stretching to assist with recovery.

TUESDAY

#100DaysOfTri Day 67

With Tuesday’s and Thursday’s being my higher intensity day’s today’s session is what is known as a PCR or Pace Calibration Run and involves running for 30 minutes at a low intensity then turning around and seeing how qwikly you can get home (more details about PCR Runs can be found here).

Based on my performance on the PCR Run, my Garmin updated my Race Predictions.

My Garmin tells me that my training is working. Can’t wait to get to the #bullermarathon2017 #qwikkiwi #coachray

WEDNESDAY

#100DaysOfTri Day 68

After the hard run yesterday, today was just a nice 30 minute recovery run. Afterwards I discovered that I was only a few seconds off the Strava record for a lap of the Fitness Trail at Quinney’s Bush where I was camping.

THURSDAY

#100DaysOfTri Day 69

Similar to last weeks session today’s session involved completing 6x 800m in 3:00 minutes (or under), then taking a 3:00 minute Rest Interval (RI). I did the session on the same section of Fitness Trail at Quinnies Bush as I did last week. I just missed my 800m times by a few seconds each repetition until I nailed the sixth rep. Times of 3:03, 3:05, 3:05, 3:07, 3:06, 2:58. Next week it will be eight reps.

FRIDAY

#100DaysOfTri Day 70

Having been so close without trying to get the Strava record a few days ago, I decided to complete another run in an anti-clockwise direction and have a fast lap and see if I could get the Strava record. Records abound today with getting the record and also breaking all records for the number of views on my website. My run was made up of five laps total starting somewhere about half way between the Strava start and finish points I did two and a half laps to get me to the Strava start line and then ran as hard as I could for a lap and then did a lap and a half for a cool down.

SATURDAY

#100DaysOfTri Day 71

After my bout of runners trots last week, I finally ventured up into the forestry block, climbing relentlessly upwards to the cell tower. This is a long grinding climb, that I did in the heat of the day. It’s not often I run with my shirt off but I did today, putting it back on to avoid sun burn once I got out of the shade of the tree’s into a more open area of the hill. On the return journey I got a few beeps, as I was running down the main road. I didn’t recognise the first vehicle but when you get three in a row something is up. My friends and family were taking a few of the bigger kids off on a wee excursion to Spooners Tunnel, the longest decommissioned rail tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere or may it was the South Island. Either way it’s recently been reopened to the public since being checked and cleared of any earthquake damage.

Here is me pointing out where I’m camping.

SUNDAY

#100DaysOfTri Day 72

Last day of camping and spent the day packing up, driving, more driving and also unpacking. I was shattered. Stretching was needed and was thus done.
