Buller Marathon

Coach Ray’s Suffering: Big Week Prior to Taper

Follow me on my Half Ironman Buller Marathon training and #100DaysOfTri journey’s concurrently. Here is how my week unfolded.

This week is my biggest training week before cutting back a bit next week and a full taper the following week. Also with the weekend being Nelson Anniversary my partner and I went glamping (in a caravan rather than tent) in Kaiteriteri for the weekend and rode some of the local mountain biking trails over there.

MONDAY

#100DaysOfTri Day 87

After the longer run yesterday, today was about getting out for a recovery run. 6km, half an hour and I’m done.

TUESDAY

#100DaysOfTri Day 88

Today was all about hill reps. I had a session of 5x 4 minutes to complete.  I also had an activity to do at Rarangi so I headed out there early and did my reps up the Rarangi-White’s Bay track. Steep and hard but I managed to be pretty consistent with the reps unlike two weeks ago.

WEDNESDAY

#100DaysOfTri Day 89

On my trip home I stopped at Pelorus Bridge again and did the Trig K Loop. It was a stinking hot day and my run was slightly slower than previous runs over this hill. A nice refreshing dip in the river afterwards was well earned today.

THURSDAY

#100DaysOfTri Day 90

Another Thursday rolls around and another set of Yasso 800’s to do. This was a repeat of last weeks ten reps. This is a tough session. I did this session early in the morning as the air temperature was cool and there was minimal wind (although this did pick up during the run).

I did my ten reps today all 3:00 minutes or under (2:54, 2:52, 2:55, 2:56, 2:58, 2:57, 2:59, 2:56, 3:00, 2:55).

Garmin keeps making predictions that I don’t think my body can cash. The results of this session indicate to me I’m capable of going close to a 3hr marathon not a two thirty marathon!!

FRIDAY

#100DaysOfTri Day 91

My last run for the week backing up the previous three hard runs since Tuesday. Up nice and early and heading up Mt Vernon I was treated to some amazing scenery as daylight arrived and then the storm clouds. I did manage to finish my run before the storm hit and it just stuck to the hills each side of the valley.

SATURDAY

#100DaysOfTri Day 92

After getting set up with the caravan, my partner and I grabbed our bikes and headed into the mountain biking park. Riding in by the pump track we rode across Cruise Control, Glade RunnerRevelation, up Ziggy and Corkscrew before descending down Jaws and the bottom half of Big Airs. The track was firm and fast giving me 5 Strava PRs.

SUNDAY

#100DaysOfTri Day 93

Getting up nice and early we drove over to Takaka to meet some friends and pick up their bikes before driving back to the top of Takaka Hill and into Canoon Downs. Leaving their car at the bottom of the hill saves us the bike back. The Rameka is a mountain bike track that follows an old pack horse track over the hill, descending 770m down the hill. Technical in places and fast and free flowing in others. This ride has it all.
