One of Whakatāne’s iconic annual events this is a multi-terrain 18km loop on the beautiful coastal Nga Tapuwae o Toi track, organised by the Whakatane Athletic and Harrier Club. Tois Challenge 18km course follows the ‘Nga Tapuwai o Toi’ track, which literally means ‘In the Footsteps of Toi’, after the Maori chief Toi who ruled the area some 800 years ago. The trail twists up and down steep coastal hills and along two beautiful beaches, through stunning bush, up and down hundreds of steps, eased by stunning views of the sparkling Pacific Ocean and distant islands. Once you reach the finish line you will have achieved something very special.

Training PlanDesigned for Beginner and Intermediate Runners who are looking to complete Julians Berry Farm and Cafe Tois Challenge, the primary goal of these training plans is to prepare you to Finish YOUR event COMFORTABLY.

Crafted by myself, Ray Boardman PGDipSportsMed, PGDipRehab, PGCertSc (Exercise Science), BSc (Anatomy), DipSportsStudies this plan encapsulates my passion for the sport, my experience from completing dozens of Half and Full Marathon distance events and my success coaching hundreds of runners.

Training PlanStarting 24 weeks before the Julians Berry Farm and Cafe Tois Challenge (on 04-Jun-18), this plan progresses through phases to build you to your peak performance. Each week includes 4 runs and a stretching session. Although not necessary, I recommend using a heart rate monitor in conjunction with a GPS watch (such as a Garmin).

Beginner 24 Week Plan

Prior to using this plan, you should be able to run comfortably for 60 minutes.

Intermediate 24 Week Plan

Prior to using this plan, you should be able to run comfortably for 90 minutes.
