Life in The Peloton: Tour of Southland Final Day Interview with Ayden Toovey

A friend of Qwik Kiwi, Ayden Toovey is riding in the Tour of Southland again having ridden in the event previously as an U19 in 2012. We will be publishing a daily interview with Ayden after each stage to give you an insight into ‘Life in the Peloton‘.

QK: What was the plan for the TT (time trial) in the morning? How did the plan go for you?

AT: I had a schedule from my coach to stick to which was 350watts for the first half then lift to 370 for the second half.  Given the fatigue in the legs it was substantially lower than what I would normally aim for but worked well for the TT.

QK: With a second stage after the TT what did you do to maximise your recovery between the two?

AT: Recovery was quite crucial between stages. I just tried to put my legs up and have a recovery drink along with a small meal before the Stage 2 start 1:30 hours after the TT.

QK: What was the plan for the final stage? How did it unfold for you?

AT: The main plan was to hold onto GC and u23 jersey and have a go in the sprint if possible. All went well except for the sprint but I am happy with the result none the less!

QK: Operating in a team environment for a full week must be pretty good. What level of support did you have in Southland for the team? Any particular people you want to thank for their assistance and support whilst you were in the Tour?

AT: Yeah the team were awesome all week long.  We got on like we had known each other for years both on and off the bike.  We all had a great time. Tineli gave us an exceptional kit to show off to the people.  Kurt Polock managed the team through the tough stages along with Noel and Pete helping us out throughout the whole tour! All the boys are very grateful for the support and awesome times had from everyone involved.
