Getting a Garmin Edge 520 – Charging and Initial Set Up

The Garmin Edge 520 is a very functional cycle computer that delivers a great number of features packed into a reasonable sized unit. Here is Part Two on how to set up your cycle computer.

I’ve recently purchased a Garmin Edge 520 from Kiwi Multisport and in this series of posts I will take you through it’s key features and how to set it up and operate it. As part of this series I’ve filmed a series of video’s on YouTube. Part one of this series can be found here:

Getting a Garmin Edge 520 – Here Is What To Expect

After taking your Garmin Edge 520 out of it’s box you will need to charge it. Although it does come with some charge in the battery you will need to charge it fully to ensure it doesn’t run flat whilst out riding.

This is easily done by opening the dust cap on the rear of the unit and plugging in the charge cable with the micro-USB plug. Then plug the other end into a USB port either using a wall point plug or straight into a computer. This will charge your battery ready for use.

When you first plug it in, the computer will power on and you can go through the set up menu. With each option that comes up you can scroll up and down through the choices using the up and down arrow buttons on the bottom left hand edge. Enter or select your choice using the top right button and if you need to go back you can press the bottom right button. It will take a little to get used to as you will see it did for me when you watch the video below.

You can also select and pair with appropriate sensors as you work through this process. You just need to have the sensors operating with in range when you do so (my Speed/Cadence Sensor had a flat battery and wouldn’t connect).

Over the rest of the week I’ll be posting a range of articles in relation to setting up your Garmin Edge 520.
