A friend of Qwik Kiwi, Guy Carter is riding in the Tour of Southland for the first time. Guy is a Chartered Accountant who is now establishing himself as a Mortgage Broker and normally rides for L&M Group Ricoh Team in the Calder Stewart Elite Cycling Series. We will be publishing a daily interview with Guy after each stage to give you an insight into ‘Life in the Peloton’.
QK: What a stage…….a team mate spending 120km in the break and then winning the stage and claiming yellow in the process. Talk us through it from the Creation Signs/L&M Group/Ricoh perspective.
GC: Very successful day, with Gatey again making the break with the rest of us in the main peloton. The gap quickly went out to 6 min in torrential rain! Gatey rode beast mode to take the win and the yellow. There was very little urgency in the peloton and we just rolled at 40km/hr, so a pretty easy day – just very cold and wet!
QK: How did the stage go for you personally?
GC: Once I missed the break our team just sat in the top 20 wheels all day keeping out of trouble and not pushing the pace. With 20km to go our team sat up and rolled in to save our energy for the last day to defend yellow.
QK: Tomorrow will still be a hard day with an ITT and then the final stage into Invercargill. What is the plan for the team and for yourself tomorrow?
GC: TT Gatey will push hard, the rest of us will just cruise it and save it for rolling the front and chasing every move on the last stage back to Queens Park!!
QK: All the best for the final day.
