UltraHumps: The Funny Side of UltraMan

Hi Team

Welcome to Blog # 30.  Well we certainly are pushing along with less than 2 weeks to go until the first of the 2 Ironman events over 2 weeks.  I also received an email from Ultraman Australia this week which reminded us athletes that it is less than 100 days to go… eeek!

Haven’t we had a great summer?  It has been absolutely crap in Wellington, but all of my training this week has been not during the bad weather, so I struck it lucky.  Not so lucky in the insomnia department though, as those of you who know me quite well, will know I am a terrible insomniac.  A crap sleep on Tuesday night meant that I ended up giving up at 0430 hours and got up and did my Wednesday two hour brick session of the bike and run then.  I am sure the farmers heading to the milking sheds were probably thinking “what the hell” as they saw this idiot or rather the lights on my training bike out in the rural areas.

Speaking of funny things, I thought I’d use some of the funny sights during Ultraman Australia in this weeks blog.  Although photo # 1 isn’t that funny, the athlete smiled about it afterward.  It is of the cyclist who hit the pavement on Day 1.  She continued for the three days with a finishers smile amongst the grazes on her face and body. What a legend, as when I spoke to her she was masking pain.  Photos # 2 and # 3 are of some of the sights you see the support teams wearing which give a motivational boost… gorilla suits, chicken suits and nuns! Photo # 4 is the result of running the double marathon in a wet running shoe, with water poured over the body on
