Wednesday Windtrainer Workout: No Limits Bike Intensity Session I
Ramp sessions are a great way to build intensity into a workout. Within this session each ramp is progressively harder than the previous rep. This will build your FTP by giving you time at both above and just below threshold. This is a great workout for triathletes, as well as road and mountain bikers.

Qualitative Comparison of Periodisation Principles and Methodology
Since September I’ve published a number of articles about the Periodisation Principles and Methodology of a number of inspirational coaches and academics. Although each coach has their own take or style of periodisation they all have a number of key features that I will summarise in this article, as well as drawing attention to where they differ (and in some instances why they differ).

Wednesday Windtrainer Workout: QK WT Class VIII
Back in 2007 I conducted windtrainer classes. I had a fleet of Minoura Mag-800’s and I hired a hall & had a great group of athletes that would join me once a week for a tough session (similar to Spinervals by Coach Troy Jacobson except I also rode with my athletes and sweated up a storm along side them). I’ve recently been tidying up some old boxes in the garage and found my old lesson plans and the music to go along side them. Although primarily designed for triathletes this session is great for anyone wanting to boost their FTP (yes, I was training with power back then with the old Polar WIND power meter temperamental as it was) and it involves riding a large portion of the workout at Threshold.

The God Father of Periodisation – Tudor Bompa
Professor Tudor Bompa is often referred to as the father of periodisation but I personally disagree as Bompa took the concepts of Hans Selye’s General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) and Leo Matveyev from the 1950’s and 60’s further developing them. Bompa is an academic who wrote prolifically on the subject both theoretically in peer reviewed journals as well as writing books on the Theory and Methodology of Periodisation, and further still on practical application in a range of different sports. Guru or God Father is a more fitting title for the single person who took the theoretical knowledge out of Eastern Block Europe and brought this knowledge to both the Western World and general sports people across a range of sports. The sixth edition of his very popular book Periodization: Theory and Methodology of Training is about to be released in a couple of weeks.
