Velocity is a great training tool that has been a massive game changer for those that ride with me regularly. Having said that, with all the tech things can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. However it doesn’t have to be – follow these instructions and you’ll be riding with me in no time.

There are three types of workouts:

  • Live Class – You ride these at the same time as me (and other athletes). I will guide you through the workout and keep your effort at the correct intensity. You will find these workouts in the schedule.
    • Tuesday 6am (NZ time) – a short (less than 45min) workout that hits a range of intensities on any given week.
    • Thursday 6am (NZ time) – a longer workout (typically 45min – 1:15hr) more aligned with athletes targeting Ironman 70.3/Ironman events; century cycling events; or marathon mountain biking events.
  • Replay Class – These classes are a replay of the video that was recorded in a live class. I have a workout of the day, and this gets played every 2 hours. I’m not there doing the class with you, both other athletes may be. I provide coaching cues and keep your focus where it needs to be. You will find these workouts in the schedule.
  • OnDemand Class – Another pre-recorded workout video, you do this session at a time of your choosing – but it’ll just be you riding with the virtual me. I provide coaching cues and keep your focus where it needs to be. If I’m planning your training, I’ll be inserting these workouts into your training to optimize your development. You will find these workouts in the list of workouts (or the link within your training plan will take you straight there).

When you first log in, you will see the upcoming Live and Replay Classes:

When joining a Live class look for the green top right corner. There is also a countdown to the start in the bottom of the box.

To search for a workout click on the blue Full Access Membership and then you can search for the relevant workout (or follow the link that is in the workout of your training plan).

Here is a video showing you your navigation around the app.

I recommend setting up and riding a few minutes of of a workout to get a feel for the process to connect in and see what the app looks like. Any workout will do, but I’d suggest either a steady ride or a Martin Gibala Interval session – it really doesn’t matter because you’ll only do the initial few minutes of the ride.

To connect to the workout you will need to connect your trainer to Velocity, this is pretty easy to do. All you need to do is ensure your BlueTooth is turned on and click this symbol near the top of the screen when you start a workout.

This will bring up a new window where you can connect your various options. If you are riding with a Heart Rate (HR) strap, I recommend you connect this first.

When you click the button to connect a device (HR, Smart Trainer/Power Meter or Cadence Sensor), a new window opens up with the options to pair.

Select the option you want and then press the Pair button (even if it has Paired next to it).

When connecting a smart trainer, once you’ve connected it, you will get an option to Enable Trainer Resistance select this option.

Some Smart Trainers can also detect your cadence and if so this will automatically be detected and connected, otherwise you can also connect a third party cadence sensor like a Garmin.

If you are having trouble connecting it might be that your trainer is already connected to another app and will need to be disconnected from there first, the usual culprits are:

  • Zwift;
  • Rouvey; or
  • Your trainers app.

Click Let’s Go to start the ride.

I’d suggest you get things set up a day prior to your first scheduled workout, in case there are some issues that I need to help guide you through. If you’ve got to this point without issue, jump on and go for a brief ride to see how it all responds.

Prior to your first full workout, if you use TrainingPeaks (and/or Strava) follow these instructions to connect Velocity to TrainingPeaks:

  • Log into the riding app: https://app.vqvelocity.com/
  • Click on your name in the upper right corner;
  • Select the option from the drop-down menu: “Connect Apps”;
  • Click Connect on next to TrainingPeaks (and/or Strava);
  • Follow the TrainingPeaks’ (and/or Strava) authorization sequence;
  • Velocity will confirm the successful app connection.
